How Much Does a Digital Product Passport Cost?

There is no credible universal price for a Digital Product Passport. Total cost is shaped by the number and granularity of passports, missing supplier data, enterprise integrations, physical carrier changes, compliance evidence and ongoing updates. Estimate the operating model in layers, and separate one-time remediation from recurring record, platform and support costs.

The DPP cost model

Use a total-cost model rather than a vendor licence quote. The useful equation is:

Total DPP cost = readiness + data remediation + implementation + physical rollout + recurring operations + change reserve

The model should cover the transition period and at least two years of operation. A low initial platform fee can hide expensive supplier onboarding or item-level transactions.

One-time implementation costs

Initial spend commonly includes applicability analysis, a data and evidence inventory, identity design, architecture, platform configuration, integrations, supplier onboarding, carrier tests and pilot delivery.

Separate foundational improvements that benefit the whole product-data environment from DPP-only costs. Cleaning supplier identities or establishing material master data may support several compliance programmes.

Recurring costs

Recurring cost can include software subscriptions, per-record or per-scan fees, API usage, hosting, supplier support, content operations, evidence refresh, monitoring and regulatory change.

Request price scenarios at expected volume, two-times volume and item-level volume. Confirm whether archived, test, duplicate and corrected records are billable.

Granularity changes the economics

A model-level passport may map one record to many units. Batch-level passports add manufacturing events. Item-level passports can require unique serialisation, carrier application, large record counts and lifecycle updates.

Do not assume granularity for budgeting. Track it as a regulatory and design dependency, then model a range while the product rule remains unsettled.

Supplier data costs

Supplier work is often underestimated. Budget for requirement communication, templates or portal access, validation, follow-up, evidence review, translation and exception handling.

The number of suppliers is less informative than the number of supplier-product relationships and required fields. One supplier can provide hundreds of materials with different evidence.
